Grief & Trauma Therapy

Find comfort to feel the emotions of loss and reprocess past traumatic events to find freedom.

What does Grief and Trauma Therapy look like?

Grief and loss can feel like losing the ground beneath your feet. Traumatic experiences shift your mind into overdrive trying to protect you from future harm. These experiences can throw you off balance, taking you on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. Recovery demands time and emotional focus to fully heal, but healing is possible. With the supportive presence of a compassionate counselor, you can process the feelings of grief. Move through the stages to find a new level of peace and acceptance of what once seemed unimaginable. You can reprocess the traumatic events that keep replaying in your mind and put them back into proper perspective, freeing you to live life more fully.

Who Needs Therapy for Grief or Trauma?

When life hits you out of nowhere and barely leaves you holding on, it is all you can do to put one foot in front of the other. At first, you may have trouble even believing what has happened. Your feelings can crowd out your ability to focus and think clearly. Intense sadness can sap your strength, leaving you exhausted, with little energy to do the most basic things. Ultimately, you need to adjust to these unwanted changes and life-altering events. It just takes time, tears, and grace for yourself to move through each stage, at whatever pace is right for you.

If you are still reeling from a tragic event, you may be overcome by recurring memories, flashbacks, or nightmares. Your body may be feeling the impact through trouble sleeping, being easily startled, or angry outbursts at others. There are interventions that can set you free from living in this torturous past.

In your fear and pain, it can feel like God is not with you like He once was. You may also be struggling with spiritual questions you may have never had to deal with before. "Where is God? How could He allow this?  Is He still good?"

Being able to ask these questions, and ultimately asking Him directly, can help you to reconnect with Him. So many mysteries of life come to light during a significant loss, sometimes leading to a crisis of faith. The good news is God is big enough to handle your questions, He welcomes them, and invites you to bring Him all of your hurt and pain. He promised to be with you, and His word says that "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18

   Signs you are making progress

After expressing your feelings and sharing them in therapy…

  •  Numbness begins to wear off, allowing pain and anger to surface, showing evidence of movement through the stages

  • Tears are able to come, releasing emotions and cleansing your soul

  • Over time, with persistence, tears come less frequently

  • Pockets of peace emerge, even moments of laughter return

  • Moments of peace expand to fill more time, as you authentically move through the stages of grief

  • Eventually, you find yourself feeling healed from the inside out, accepting that this

loss or event would somehow be a part of a greater story in your life
